Subclass 417

The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) allows young adults from eligible countries to live, work, and travel in Australia for up to 12 months—with the potential to extend for up to three years through specified regional work. It’s your opportunity to immerse yourself in Australian culture while funding your adventure through short-term employment.

Who Can Apply?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are aged 18–30, or 18–35 for passport holders from the UK, Canada, Ireland, or France.

  • Hold a valid passport from an eligible country.

  • Apply from outside Australia (for your first 417 visa).

  • Have at least AUD 5,000 in available funds plus a return or onward ticket.

  • Have no dependent children accompanying you.

  • Meet Australian health and character requirements.

Extend Your Stay: 2nd & 3rd Working Holiday Visas

You can extend your stay by applying for a second or third Subclass 417 visa if you complete the required specified work:

Visa Type Specified Work Requirement

Second 417 Visa Minimum 3 months (88 days) of eligible work

Third 417 Visa Minimum 6 months of eligible work

Note for UK Citizens: From 1 July 2024, you can apply for all three Working Holiday visas without completing specified work.

What Counts as Specified Work?

To qualify for the second or third visa, your work must be:

  • In an approved industry

  • In a designated regional location

  • Paid, and compliant with Australian workplace laws

Approved Industries:

  • Agriculture & Farming (fruit picking, pruning, packing, etc.)

  • Animal Care (cattle station work, shearing, etc.)

  • Fishing & Pearling

  • Tree Farming & Felling

  • Mining

  • Construction

  • Tourism & Hospitality (only in Northern or remote areas)

  • Bushfire Recovery & Volunteer Work (for declared disaster zones)

  • Flood & Other Natural Disaster Recovery
