Subclass 864

Contributory Aged Parent visa

This is a permanent visa and allows the parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to stay in Australia permanently. The requirements are not very different to Subclass 884 Contributory Aged Parent visa (Temporary).

You must

  • have a child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen

  • be old enough to get aged pension in Australia. (follow the link Pension Age in Australia for pension age)

  • be sponsored by an eligible child whose sponsorship is approved by the Department of Home Affairs. You don't need to meet this requirement if you are applying for the Retirement Pathway. (for eligibility criteria of a parent sponsor, follow the 'parent sponsor eligibility criteria' in the links section below)

  • not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Subclass 870 visa.

  • meet the family balance test except if you hold a Subclass 173 or applying for the Retirement Pathway. (To determine if you meet this test, refer to the family balance table provided in the following link)

  • pay the visa application charge which is paid in two instalments. First instalment is paid at the time of application and the second instalment before the visa grant. Follow the link below for information about the visa application charge.
